Scripture: Matthew 19: 16-22
Verse for Today: What good will it be for someone if
they gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can someone give in exchange for their soul? (Matthew 16:26)
The rich young ruler desired the greatest
gift of all-the gift of eternal life, and he certainly went to the appropriate person to learn about it. When Jesus told him
to sell all that he had and give it to the poor and become a disciple, the young ruler was extremely saddened. He had a tremendous
amount of wealth and importance and this, to him, was his primary focus. His possessions were what stood in the way of eternity.
While he possessed many of the principles
and ideals of the Rabbi he spoke with, they were overshadowed by his possessions. Others also had wealth in the scriptures,
like Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathaea. Each had a special connection with the Messiah and gave of what they had, showing
compassion and concern. Their possessions took second place to their interaction with Jesus.
God has granted great wealth to people throughout scriptures and the
message has consistently been clear that if God is put first, all else will follow. When we demand our stereos, hi-tech toys
and cars at the expense of our tithes and offerings, something is bound to give. And, like the rich young ruler, we will most
likely go away saddened.
God
of love and giving, help us to see that if we put You first, Your gifts of love will follow.
